2Do not buy this product!!Dec 10, 2007
By A. Low
My 3 year old daughter got this Moon Sand playset as a gift this weekend. She was really excited to play with it, and I was too because it looked like a neat toy.
I was wrong! The pictures make it look like it holds a shape like play dough does, but it doesnt. Its literally a box of sand, and very little more. It will hold a molded shape loosely, but the shape is very delicate and if you try to pick it up or move it it falls apart. My daughter has tried playing with this twice, but both times she got very frustrated and wanted to play with play dough instead.
My biggest complaint is that the playset comes with 3 different bags of colored sand, but once you put them together there is now way to separate them again. The colors mix together, as you would expect sand to, and when you're done you have one big blob of multi colored sand.
And dont get me started on the clean up. It does brush right off of clothes, and is easily swept up with a broom (but then its in the trash and you need to buy more), but imagine trying to scoop sand out of a plastic container....its not easy! It took me 30 minutes to clean up after my daughter got frustrated from only 10 minutes of play.
It really is a neat concept, and I hope they come up with solutions to these issues.

5VERY FUN! KIDS LOVE IT, PROS OUTWEIGH ANY CONDec 26, 2007
By Happy Homemaker

After reading other reviews, I just have to put in a good word for moon sand. We have two sets, including this one, and it is loved by all in our household.

Yes, it can get messy and come out of the container... If it falls to the floor, it vacuums right up since it is a relatively dry substance. Have you tried to vacuum up Play Doh? It gums up the sweeper if it's wet and gets permanently pressed in the carpet if it's dry, so I'll take "easy to clean" moon sand anyday. If it gets on the table, I just use a dry paper towel to wipe it off the side and put it back in the container, since the table is clean. We have very little waste. (You could always put a clean mat under it during play if overflow is a concern.)

Moon sand never dries out, honestly. Our first set moved across 8 states from last year, sat in hot storage for a few months and is still soft and supple. (It was also one of the first toys the kids asked to play with) Playdoh is rock hard overnight if left unattended.

Moon sand is very pliable, however it does take a mild amount of pressure to compress it to mold it. We have found that 4 to 5 year olds in play group had no trouble, and we didn't have problems getting it out of molds like other sticky doughs.

Yes, the multiple colored sand did mix together, my kids did that on purpose to "make it pretty", however I always found a wad of multi colored dough when the children played with different colors of dough, anyway. They don't mind, so why should I?

The biggest factor of all and the biggest reason to ever buy a toy... THE CHILDREN HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH THIS! Isn't that what it's all about? I'll buy any toy that has a few perceived small cons that I know they will love compared to an easy to maintain toy that will sit on the shelf and bring no joy at all. I find that almost every toy has clean up, and this one has less than most for me. I respect that it may not be for the other reviewers, maybe perhaps not for "toddler" ages? I can honestly say for our household of 4 and up it is absolutely a favorite requested toy. Visitors that come and play all love it too. Enjoy!

2Kids love it, parents will hate it.Dec 25, 2007
By OzCadenza
We thought it was sort of an "indoor sandbox" that would be fun like play-doh. My 4 yr old grandson loves it. He is in construction mode and wants to dig and haul and roll out with small plastic "diggers." Keeps at it for hours. Now for the bad news. It creates a colossal mess if used indoors. It isn't really sand like you get at the beach or the play sand you get from Home Depot; it's more like Portland Cement. It is sticky and does not yield to any known cleaning method except possibly a Zamboni. Sticks to everything and tracks all over the house. Does not come out of carpet -- EVER. The diggers are now closed up in the moon sand case because the stuff won't come off the toys and you can't wash it off, either - seems to get hard and even sticker when you hit it with water. So it's a one way trip for any other toys that touch the moon sand. Fun for the kids, but VERY high maintenance.

4Bad rap for Moon Sand?Dec 26, 2007
By Logical Libertine
I am surprised at how poorly rated this item is. Let me talk about the positives I see with this toy.

Many have complained about the clean-up. I have marble floors, so sweeping is an option for me. However, if I did have carpet, I would have assumed it would NOT be the ideal location to play with moon sand. As anyone with children knows, they need their own area to just "be" - and that usually is sans carpet. The inflatable "pool" that the kit comes with is a good idea - but I recommend, again, it being used on a flat surface that can easily be swept afterwards.

The molded sand is fragile - and little hands may have a hard time being gentle - but that seemed to be half the fun for my little one. Just as at the beach, she wouldn't expect her sandcastle to be structurally sound.

People complaining about the expense of "sand" seem to just be jealous they didn't think of it first. We love bringing the fun of a day at the beach indoors in a nice little table-top setup.

This is great for a household that can tolerate a kid being a kid. There might even be a few bits of sand on the floor afterwards *gasp* - but if you can handle that then maybe moon sand is for your little one.

4Messy but funJan 14, 2008
By Mary S. Toelke
Although I had read very negative reviews of this product, I purchased it anyway because my granddaughter really wanted it. And, I am glad I did. Yes, it is messy. No, it is not educational. But, it is fun. She has spent many hours playing with this sand toy and sharing the fun with her friends. Not every toy has to be educational and "unmessy". Play for the sake of play and fun without having to worry about the mess is a welcome change for a child.
