Fabulous toy for the whole family!Jul 28, 2007
By Christine Louise Hohlbaum
"award-winning author, PR consultant, and actor"
What started out as an idea to keep him busy for an hour while I fixed a software installation issue on my computer, ended up being a wonderful family project as we built the LEGO Fire Station together. Life surprises us like that as we struggle to do our best. We think things will end up one way, and oftentimes, unplanned, they end up completely differently, but even better than expected. He got me away from the computer time and again until I finally ditched any thoughts of dinner, called the pizza delivery guy, and set to work to create a new playworld for my son.
My almost six-year-old son took the lead, enthralled by the little pieces and sometimes challenged by the instructions. Nonetheless, he independently worked on the rescue vehicle while my daughter and I tackled the fire truck. At first, ee mumbled under this breath that he wasn't good at building things. Oh yeah? LEGO Fire Station proved he could. It makes me cry to think how much of a boost he got in his confidence by completing such an elaborate building in one day.
My husband put together the station, then we moved it all to the family room for more fun the next day. Admittedly, the fire station requires adult supervision. I was even challenged at times to find all the right pieces. Luckily, the bags are clearly numbered, as well as the instruction booklets. Just be sure to keep them handy in case your child decides to play 'car crash' with the fire truck like ours did!
With other toys that require assembly, my kids seems excited by putting it together, then leave the toy unnoticed thereafter. The LEGO Fire Station has elicited a different reaction. They love the assembly AND playing with it, too. In fact, we had to convince our son to go to a playdate he has been anticipating for months today, simply because he did not want to part with his new toy. I'm certain he's going to want the other LEGO CITY toys, too. As I eye my son's room, I figure we can always have a yard sale or, more drastically, move to a bigger house. After all, there are few toys I can remember more distinctly from my childhood than LEGOs. Can you?

A perfect gift for a five-year-oldMay 08, 2007

I bought this set for my son'e 5th birthday. He absolutely loved it and was determined to go through some of the difficulties of building a set as complicated as this one. After he built it, he put it on a table and appreciated it. Sometimes he could sit by the fire station set for about a whole hour to do his imaginary play.

Still as good as ever.Jan 13, 2008
By cmp1313 I had Legos when I was young, so now that my son is 6, it's his turn. I gave all mine away to another youngster when I was in high school (who then gave them to his younger brother--they last forever), so I have to buy new ones. These are every bit as good as the ones I had over 20 years ago. My son already wants more to add to his set. I guess he'll have to wait for his birthday to see what he gets. I only wish Lego would put more drawings of other ways to build the sets. I always liked doing the instruction set first, then trying to copy the pictures. Great for the imagination.

Neat set, age range is questionable...Feb 02, 2009

"more of myself after winter"
My son turned 5 in November. We bought this in January - so he was a pretty new 5. We got him this set and set 6187 (age 4+). These were his first real Legos (he has had Duplos)
He did great with set 6187 (lets you make a few little construction vehicles). But this one... not so much. He could get a good ways into putting things together, but he'd get frustrated after a bit and need help. It's OK that he needs help, but then he wants to play with the finished objects, which tends to result in tiny tiny pieces all over the house. Since you need all the pieces to put this together, losing pieces is not fun!
We've put it away and will try again in a few months. Right now, he's just not mature enough for this set. It's really a neat set, though. I'd just suggest it's better maybe for 6 and up, though of course every child is different.
We're going to get set 6164 instead which I think will satisfy the love of emergency vehicles without so much frustration.
Oh - but FWIW we got this in a certain large toy store everyone knows, and we paid about half the asking price here. Price here is high!

Lego City Fire StationJan 13, 2009
By Paula Funaro I bought this set for my grandson instead of the Lego Fire Engine and what a good deal it was for $10 more he has a whole station and another vehicle! Marc is 8 years old and Legos are his favorite toys - he enjoyed putting it together and enjoys being able to play with it. The City category Legos seem to be more durable for playing with after they are built! Thanks to Amazon for the best Christmas ever for my grandson - I found all the "hard to find" lego sets he wanted at great prices and free easy saver shipping!!!
