3durable, colorful, not too loud... but not terribly exicitingAug 17, 2005
By Joe'sMom
My husband plays guitar and my 1 year old loves music of all kinds. So we thought it would be fun to get this toy for my son's first birthday. Unfortunately, he just never got into it. He plays with it sometimes but it just wasn't a big hit.

On the plus side, the buttons are large and easy to push. The toy has a nice handle that makes holding onto it easy for little hands. There is a variety in the music that plays, so I don't get sick of hearing the same tune over and over. Plus, the tunes it does play are jazzy and funky - not your basic lullabys.

On the negative side, there is not much to the toy. There are I think 2 main buttons to push plus a wheel type thing that spins on the side. There are a couple of lights that light up when the buttons are pushed, but that's it. No educational value, and not very fun.

When he first got it, my son pushed the buttons a couple of times, and was happy that he could walk and hold the guitar at the same time with ease. Then he quickly got tired of it and moved on to something else. We were definitely suckered by the fact that the toy is guitar shaped. If it had been any other shape we would never have bought it.

If you really want to introduce to your child a musical kind of toy, with buttons that are easy for babies to push by themselves, I would instead recommend the Alphabet Pal by Leap Frog. It has several different settings, so it teaches colors, songs, letters, and lights up when the string is pulled (great for little walkers!)

I think this guiter seems a fairly inadequate toy, it doesn't really do very much. However, my 1-yr-old REALLY likes it. It has never been his favorite toy, but it is one he always comes back to and has consistently enjoyed since he was about 5 mos. old--whichi is saying a lot for the cost of the toy. I've never had to change the batteries, either.

2Very Unhappy Musician!!Nov 26, 2005

I purchased this toy for my daughter. Since my husband plays guitar, I thought it would be a cute idea to get my daughter a guitar, too. What a mistake! It worked for about 2 months and then the "strings" stopped playing the music. I thought I needed to change the batteries, that was not the case. After about 2 weeks, the top botton, which makes silly sounds stopped playing. It was useless. It was just a plastic guitar with no sounds! I just threw it away. It was such a waste of money!

5loved it since 3 months oldNov 26, 2005

my son got this as a gift when he was only 3 months but he loved the music and really loved the lights! now he's all most 9 months and still plays with it. he loves to play with it while his grandfather plays his guitar. it has survied many drops on our ceramic floor from his walker so it's proven to be very durable. plus the batteries last a while, i've only changed them once.

3Cute but not very entertainingOct 19, 2005

I ordered this for my son because he always tried grabbing his daddy's guitar when he was playing it. I figured that he should have one of his own. After playing with it for a few minutes he hasn't touched it. His grandmother bought him a mini guitar (with no lights, music... just wood and strings) and he likes that more. I don't know if it's just my son that gets bored to easily and wants big boy toys or if everyone will have the same problem. I'd say- give it a try and see if your baby likes it. I'm going to give it a go again and if he still doesn't like it I'll just put it away until later or another baby. Good luck with yours!
